Scarborough International School was pleased to welcome a group of high school students from Santiago de Chile for a 3 week cultural visit to the UK. As well as enjoying trips to London, Cambridge, the Lake District and Edinburgh, they were also able to visit a selection of museums and heritage sites relating to Britain's historical past, giving them an insight into British culture.

The sparkling new tearoom we found on our return after the holidays really gave us a boost. It's fresh and light and makes coffee time feel like a special occasion!

Excursion News

Excursion1

As another busy summer draws to a close we were reminiscing over our mid-week excursion programme.

Firstly how lucky we were with the weather! Not a drop of rain fell on any of our excursions – well, at least not until it was time to go home anyway (remember July's trip to Whitby?).

Over the weeks we caught crabs in Robin Hood’s Bay, met some hairy bikers in Helmsley, fed the ducks in Thornton Le Dale, wondered at Pickering's medieval frescoes and shopped till we dropped in Hull. Anyone who saw the Samurai demonstration in the Royal Armouries will certainly have a lasting memory of Leeds!

Harry Potter fans were doubly satisfied this summer: locomotive 5972 was housed in the National Railway Museum in York, so they were able to have their photo taken with the legendary “Hogwarts Express”, while our visit to Hogsmeade Station (otherwise known as Goathland!) meant they could imagine themselves on their way to a new term at the famous “School of Witchcraft and Wizardry”.

Finally, a big thanks to all the SIS staff, the education liaison departments we contacted and, of course, the coach drivers who helped to make this year’s excursions a resounding success!

Family Courses a Real Hit!

Family1
Family2
This summer saw family groups from Italy, Spain, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Japan take advantage of Scarborough International School's programmes which allow the whole family to enjoy a study break in the United Kingdom together. By booking an adult vacation course for Mum and/or Dad, and teen/junior vacation courses for the kids all the family can study English in the mornings, take part in a fun range of activities in the afternoons (lessons for the adults!) and enjoy a full programme of optional full day & weekend excursions. For the younger members of the family (the under 7's) the school also organises day care in a local nursery. Parents can drop off their little ones before classes begin and pick them up at the end of the school day, leaving them free to get on with enjoying their lessons!

End of the Summer

End of Summer3

Last week the summer came to an end as the vacation courses finished for the year. We said goodbye to Klemens, Kenny, Lara, Kattia and Simal, and we wish them all the best in the future! It has been another very successful summer. We hope all of our students who studied with us enjoyed themselves to the full and will return again soon!

Pancake Day

Pancake Day
21st February, 2012

We took our students down to the Foreshore in the afternoon to let them experience how Shrove Tuesday is celebrated in the traditional Scarborough way – skipping on the beach. It is believed that its origins lie in the local fishermen sorting their ropes and nets out at this time of year – they would give the children the ones which were no good for fishing. An afternoon of physical exertion was finished off with some well-earned fish’n’chips on the seafront.

John's trip to Lithuania

John, our Director of Studies, has recently returned from Lithuania where he completed delivery of a year long series of training sessions for senior government officials and politicians who will be involved in organising meetings during the country's Presidency of the EU. The course concentrated on English for diplomacy, English for meetings and English for negotiations. Following the success of the programme Scarborough International School of English has been invited to bid for contracts delivering training to officials at the EU institutions in Brussels.

Simal's Birthday

Simals birthday

What a fantastic night at El Gringo's restaurant for the lovely Simal's Birthday. It was a great evening with students and staff joining together to relax and have fun. Lots of birthday presents - the biggest birthday present of all was when her father walked through the door all the way from Turkey just to surprise her!!! It was a lovely moment with lots of happy tears - not just from Simal either!! A good time was had by all, and we look forward to the next birthday get-together!!

Testimonials

Testimonials

“I've been to Scarborough International School twice now, first taking a Teen Vacation course and then, two years later, an Intensive General English for 6 months. The staff are amazing and lovely people, the teachers are professional; if the school wasn't amazing I wouldn't have gone there twice and you know what, I would go there a the third time, but the next time with my brothers. About Scarborough, it's a very nice and safe place to visit and live, you could have a nice time on the lovely beach. My host family was such a great family I felt like I was living with my real family. I really like my memories there, I wouldn't forget anything.”

Testimonials

“I highly recommend the International School of English (SIS) and Scarborough as the places to learn or improve your English!”

“I lived and worked in Scarborough for 8 months, and I spent my first and last month in SIS. That was very useful to my daily life, because there I could make lots of good friends. Some of them were British and others were Japanese, Italian, Russian, and many different other nationalities.”

Testimonials

“I lived my first experience abroad two years ago in Scarborough and, if I was a bit reluctant at the beginning because I was alone, I had to get used to my host family′s routine and I didn′t know the town I would stay in for two weeks, the students I met at school, my new teachers and all the staff managed to make me feel at home. To be honest, you can enjoy a Teen Vacation with your friends even within the borders of your own country, but at Scarborough International School I found a special atmosphere: students coming from all over the world have the opportunity to tell each other about their culture, habits and plans for the future, as if they knew each other very well. In fact I believe this intercultural exchange is the true novelty which I was impressed with. In addition, Scarborough is a nice town with some relaxing leafy areas, the places I visited on my school excursions in Yorkshire were dramatic and interesting, while the afternoon and evening activities proposed were really enjoyable. To sum up, I was absolutely satisfied with my SIS experience so that I decided to have another Teen Vacation there this year.”

Testimonials

“About a year ago we were on the verge of booking a holiday which was going to be a little out of the ordinary; a week’s study holiday in Scarborough for Dad with seven-year-old daughter. Mum meanwhile would be having a week’s holiday in the true sense of the word. A year on and we are getting ready to repeat the positive and enjoyable experience this adventure turned out to be. The organisation of the school immediately gave us a series of guarantees: our homestay accommodation was arranged with a family who had a young daughter, the study programme was balanced and well-adapted to the needs of both father and daughter.”
