General English - Age: 16+

AC1

4 hrs per day General English (mornings, Mon-Fri)

Classes concentrating on the four language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking, together with remedial grammar. Vocabulary and everyday language are key components of the programme. Course content is negotiated with students, who will explore a particular topic or theme, becoming actively engaged in the language.

Intensive General English - Age: 16+

AC2

4 hrs per day General English (mornings, Mon-Fri)

+ 2 hrs per day General English (afternoons, Mon-Thurs)

Full-day course for those wishing to develop further their communicative skills.

Intensive IELTS Examination Preparation- Age: 16+

AC3

4 hrs per day General English (mornings, Mon-Fri)

+ 2 hrs per day IELTS examination preparation (afternoons, Mon-Thurs)

A course aimed at maximising IELTS results. Students may join at any point during the course. There are 4 lessons in the morning concentrating on the four language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking, together with remedial grammar. In the afternoon there is intensive practice for the examination, with practice tests and step-by-step examples of how to answer examination questions.

Intensive Combination - Age: 16+

AC5

4 hrs per day General English (mornings, Mon-Fri)

+ 2 hrs per day 1:1 tuition (afternoons, Mon-Thurs)

A chance to combine general English morning classes with one-to-one tuition, tailor-made to suit the individual learning needs of the student. Options may include General English, Business English, IELTS Examination Preparation or English for Specific Purposes such as; English for Medicine, Lawyers or Human Resources.

Intensive Business Combination - Age: 18+

4 hrs per day General English (mornings, Mon-Fri)

+ 2 hrs per day 1:1 Business English (afternoons, Mon-Thurs)

4 lessons in the morning concentrating on the four language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking, together with remedial grammar. In the afternoon the emphasis is on helping students to improve their business English communication skills. Lessons concentrate on speaking activities in a business context. Tasks are practical and students are encouraged to relate course content to their own business experience.

1:1 English for Specific Purposes - All ages

AC7

Classes tailored to individual needs which may include General English, Business English, IELTS Examination Preparation or English for Specific Purposes such as; English for Medicine, Lawyers or Human Resources.

Adult Vacation - Age: 16+

AC6

4 hrs per day General English (mornings, Mon, Tues, Wed & Fri)

+ 2 hrs per day General English (afternoons, Mon, Tues & Wed)

+ 1 full-day excursion (Thurs)

Suitable for those who wish to improve their English while enjoying the attractions that the area has to offer. An intensive full day course from Monday to Wednesday, a full-day excursion on Thursday, plus morning classes on Friday.

English for Fashion - Age: 16+

English for Specific Purposes 6 hrs per day - Please contact us for availability

Full-day course for those working or intending to work in fashion, and wanting to improve their English communicative skills. Lessons will be topic-based and will work on building vocabulary while reviewing and revising grammar.

English for Commercial and Corporate Lawyers - Age: 18+

English for Specific Purposes 6 hrs per day - Please contact us for availability

Full-day course which will be useful for all those who practise commercial or corporate law or are studying to become lawyers. The course will also benefit those studying for TOLES (Test of Legal English Skills) or the Cambridge International Legal English examination.

English for Insurance Professionals - Age: 18+

Full-day course for all those employed in the insurance industry who work in an international context and need to improve their business communication skills.

English for International Meetings - Age: 18+

English for Specific Purposes 6 hrs per day - Please contact us for availability

Full-day course for all those who need to participate in international meetings. The course is particularly useful for those who chair meetings, take part in negotiations, participate in international conferences or are required to attend formal international meetings.

Pathways to Higher Education - Age: 16+

AC14

20 hrs per week General English (mornings, Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs & Fri).

Aimed at High School graduates who intend to progress to Further or Higher Education this course combines general English with English for Academic Purposes (EAP). There are four general English lessons in the morning followed by specific skills classes in the afternoons.

Any Monday, September to April (Except Christmas, New Year & Bank Holidays)

University Preparation Course - Age: 16+

AC15

28 hrs per week English for Academic Purposes (mornings, Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs & Fri and afternoons Mon, Tues, Wed & Thurs).

The primary goal of this twelve week course is to prepare students for academic life in the UK. We provide a friendly, caring and supportive service for those intending to study at university. All students have the opportunity to take the IELTS examination with the aim of achieving a higher band score.

Every Monday, year round (Except Christmas, New Year & Bank Holidays)

Teen Vacation - Age: 13-17yrs

4 hrs per day General English (mornings, Mon, Tues, Wed & Fri)

+ 3 afternoon activities per week (Mon, Tues & Wed)

+ 2 evening activities per week (Mon & Wed)

+ 1 full-day excursion (Thurs)

A course aimed at motivating and engaging teenagers by making language learning enjoyable. The course combines project-based teaching with outcomes negotiated with students. There is one full day excursion and a packed programme of sports and activities.

Available on selected dates in April, June, July and August

Junior Vacation - Age: 7-12yrs

SC2

4 hrs per day General English (mornings, Mon, Tues, Wed & Fri)

+ 3 afternoon activities per week (Mon, Tues & Wed)

+ 1 full-day excursion (Thurs). Junior students must be accompanied by a parent/guardian on all full day excursions. Special arrangements apply to unaccompanied juniors.

A course aimed at motivating and engaging juniors by making language learning enjoyable. The course is project-based and includes a full day excursion and a packed programme of sports and activities. Children aged under 13 are accompanied by a teacher on all afternoon activities from 2-4pm, leaving parents free to join the Adult Vacation course.

Academic Holiday Programme - Age: 13-17yrs

20 hrs per week General English (mornings, Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs & Fri).

8 hrs per week activities (afternoons, Mon, Tues, Wed & Thurs)

This course aims to combine English for Academic Purposes, focussing on the skills needed at secondary school level, with a CLIL approach to academic subjects. CLIL lessons teach school subjects in a way that aims to improve the student's use of English.

Available May/October 2013 and April/May 2014

Pre-Sixth Form Course - Age: 15-17yrs

SC4

28 hrs per week including English for Academic Purposes and CLIL

This course aims to combine English for Academic Purposes, focussing on the skills needed at sixth form level, with a CLIL approach to academic subjects. CLIL lessons teach school subjects in a way that aims to improve the student's use of English. There is an emphasis on preparing student for the independent study skills needed at this level.

Available June

Day Care for children - Age: 0-6yrs

AC9

While you study your child/children will be placed at a local child care centre, within walking distance of the school, together with English children. The centre operates flexible hours enabling you to leave your child/children in the morning before lessons and pick up your child/children after lessons or activities in the afternoon. Care is provided by qualified child care professionals. Note: for this service Scarborough International School of English acts as an agent for the centre which observes the Children’s/Young Persons’ Act 2008.

Children on this course must be accompanied to and from the centre each day by a parent or guardian.

CLIL School Groups - Age: 13+

AC8

A course for school groups incorporating CLIL lessons based on the English National Curriculum. The emphasis is on maximising student involvement in the language by engaging them in thought-provoking activities and projects. We aim to make the classes interactive and stimulating, while building students’ confidence when communicating in English.

Availability: Jan-Mar 2013, Sept-Dec 2013

Closed groups (Minimum 12 students)
